Itch is an experimental short about skin, and how it feels to be tested and prodded. It is inspired by my own past experiences of allergies and eczema, and was a way for me to channel my frustrations into something creative and positive. The film is brought to life using pixelation, a technique where real people are used to produce stop-motion animation. The resulting effect can be quite jarring and eerie, which made it the perfect medium to use. Having previously used the technique on other shorts, One Minute Workshop and Random Acts: Ready or Not, it was something I wanted to keep exploring in a different, more experimental context. What really sets Itch apart from my other films is that the sound design came first. The whole film is derived from and inspired by a one-minute soundtrack, created by NFTS Sound Designer Antek Rutycznski. Assigned tracks at random, each of the 8 NFTS Animation Directors had to devise a film to accompany the soundtrack, in what is known as ‘Project 3’ at the school. In the edit, Oli Bauer and I enjoyed our first collaboration. What began as a film shot tightly to my animatic became something all-the-more exciting in post. It was also a chance to collaborate with my brother, Matt Lawson, who plays the patient, and my good friend Ethan Bates, who plays the doctor. The nurse is played by me. For the Animation department, that workshop is ‘Character of Place’, a collaboration between students of Directing Animation, Cinematography and Production Design. There are four teams of 6, with each member taking an assistant role one week, and a HoD role the next. This film is the one I directed, with cinematographer Jamie Touche and production designer Eve Finnie. I started our first meeting by saying that I wanted to tell a story about a magical workshop… And the others threw themselves into building this weird and wonderful world with me. A characterful place. Assisted by Iza Barscz and Kate Beard, and starring Charlie Jenkins, this delightful film was one of the highlights of my time at the NFTS, and introduced me to some very special people who would become crew members on Build Me Up. I was thrilled when the superbly talented Lisa Marini asked me to help her create an animated music video for a single from her debut album, Born in Tribes. Secondhand New talks about all manner of topical issues, with clever lyrics and wonderful wordplay. We wanted to explore the subjects of news, media and the im-personable made personable, with vivid imagery coming to our minds about plants, growth and an organic quality. It was a great challenge to work with such a tight budget, and that of course is where pixelation shines. I was delighted that we were able to shoot in and around the Newell abode in North Yorkshire, where - as a teenager - Arthur, Adam, Cal and I (known then as Sonic Tractor) - would hang out and play music. Since Lisa is now a part of their family, it made complete sense to shoot it in this amazing, quirky setting that meant so much to all of us involved.
